Wandella FNC Club Notes Round 5 2023

Round 4 took us to Moulamein where some intriguing match-ups took place across the footy & netball, with many of the opposing sides in several grades close to each other on the ladder. As exciting as the on-field action at Moulamein can be, nothing will ever beat the gourmet hotdogs served at the canteen here over the years. The excitement of waiting for one on the long drive from Barham is only matched by the disappointment of realising that they are no longer served. Speaking of tasty hotdogs, I heard that Ziggy is quite talented at cooking them…

Highlights

We had success among our teams last weekend with the Under 14 & 17 girls both bringing home the chocolates along with King Waddingham’s Under 14 boys!

The Under 17 netballers continued their impressive form, as they came out strong and determined on Saturday morning. The defensive pressure all the way down the court enabled the girls to get the turnovers and the accurate shooting from Coco and Nikita meant the team capitalised every time.

We made some big positional changes in the 2nd quarter, showing just how versatile this bunch of girls really are. Indy and Montana, the teams 2 pocket rockets, held strong and dominated in the mid court. Bainli worked hard all day reading the play beautifully and picking off many balls. Working to her strengths, Aleeyah used her height to her advantage and kept the encouragement up all day. Even though Ellie and Mia changed up positions each quarter, they were able to settle and ensured there were hands over every ball which made the Moula girls work hard for everything. It really was a great team effort by everyone, great work girls!

There was also more Midday Magic this weekend, with both the Reserves fellas and B Res girls notching up great wins!

Coach Megs couldn’t wait to tell us all out the girls’ win post-game: With no wins under our belt so far and Moulmein in the same boat, our team was very hungry to grab their first win for the season! After a slow start we were well down after the first quarter, some major changes in the Goals, C WD & GD saw some improvement, but were still 8 down coming into the 4th quarter, however things were really coming together as a team so with 1 little change in the C we came out strong and in an epic comeback we ran away with a 1 point Win!! A brilliant game played by all, here’s hoping this is the start of a great run for the B Res girls after putting in some really hard work over recent weeks and finally getting some reward!

Over to the senior football game and it was pleasing to see that Golden Rivers Football is becoming comparable to some AFL football with the goalkicking of the senior boys resembling the North Melbourne-St Kilda game. Unfortunately, I had the pleasure of watching both games live over the weekend and feel my time could have been better spent elsewhere.

Overall, the boys put on a much-improved 2nd half against a very talented Moulamein side to only go down by two goals. There were plenty of encouraging signs once again and hopefully the boys can put it altogether consistently as the season goes on!

On a sadder note, star ruckman Lee Pollock suffered a nasty leg injury during the game that has put an end to his season. The whole club feels for Lee, wishes him all the best in his recovery and hope to see him around the club again later in the season!

Social Club

Tonight after our clash with Hay we welcome Luke Murray back to the clubrooms for Wandella’s 2nd annual Trivia Night! He loves spilling sauce on his shirt and filming the clouds during football games but most importantly he loves boggling peoples’ minds with his niche Trivia facts! In all seriousness, Luke puts on a terrific night and hopefully this year’s can be just as big of a success as last year.

Entry is free and all ages are welcome, but the juniors better get in quick as Macca and Russ have already taken a couple of seats at the kids table!
