Wandella FNC Club Notes Round 2 2023
A wet and soggy day couldn’t dampen the round 1 spirits at Wandella last weekend as a huge crowd turned out to kick off the season. By the end of the day you would struggle to find a vacant car park, space to stand under the hangar or a spare bit of food in the canteen such was the huge turn out. Thanks to everyone from both Wandella & Macorna who turned out to make it such a success!
Football & Netball
Rowey, Ziggy & their Midday Magicians were the story of the day as they picked up where they left off from a strong 2022 finals series with a promising win over the always competitive Macorna reserves side. Ziggy relished his promotion from magnet shifter to co-coach to deliver a stirring half-time address that even made Rowey take a backseat temporarily (I’m sure the boys paid very close attention).
On the field, and the rain tumbled down from midway through the 2nd quarter leaving the field rather damp and the footy resembling a bar of soap. For once, this gave the lads a genuine excuse for their 37 fumbles per quarter and attempted torpedos every non-fumbled possession. The midfield showed they had put in some great work over the off-season maintaining great intensity throughout the game and an unusually organised display around the stoppages. Chilli & Hodgey slotted in well into what will be a very formidable backline throughout the season, with lots of dash off the half backline. Speaking of pace, after a big pre-season Roughy made a much celebrated return to the side, showing his great knack of always being in the right spot and providing plenty of wisdom to the younger boys.
In other highlights, Knackers jagged a surprising sausage (that he was still talking about at Tuesday training) while Aussie snagged a relatively unsurprising yellow card! Good luck for the rest of the year boys!
To the netball courts and B Grade kicked off the season in nail-biting fashion with a one goal with over Macorna. With a health mix of new and returning faces, it’s an exciting team with plenty of promise for the new season.
Congratulations to Hayley Higgs on her successful return the netball court, an inspiration to the whole club and hopefully she can enjoy a successful return this year!
The girls got off to a bit of a rocky start but found their feet as the 1st quarter wore on, gaining some momentum as new player Macey Bott backed herself in to sink some early goals aided by the experience of Hayley in the ring. The girls were able to maintain their lead for the remainder of the game mainly due to some excellent defensive pressure across the court, with the defenders in the ring getting their hands on almost everything. Coach Olo was particularly impressed with several defensice efforts late in the game to force turnovers and allow the girls to hold on. Hopefully they can continue the winning form at Ultima this week!
Social Club
It’s back to the Sporties for dinner after our road trip to Ultima, let’s get back to support one of our major sponsors, celebrate a few wins and see what specials Chum has lined up for us!
Round 3 after Murrabit will see us holding our Player Calcutta Auction & Cow Pat Lotto. Hope everyone remembers to bring their wallets!
