Hay Lions Netball reports – Round 1 vs Ultima (in Hay) – 15/04/2023
A Grade
Ultima 52 defeated Hay 25
Hay’s young side came up against an experienced and strong Ultima team. Credit to the Hay girls who executed passages of play and applied a lot of defensive pressure all the way down the court. Emma Johnston (DG Harrison Players Player) used her height & two hand grab to get numerous rebounds, Hannah Stewart (South Hay Hotel Umpires Award) played a strong attacking game in WA, providing great support to the shooters, and Jade Auldist (Hay Lions Coaches Award) played an experienced and strategic game in centre.
B Grade
Hay 35 defeated Ultima 29
Hay started off strong, but knew we had to work hard. We had pressure over every ball and Ultima found it difficult to get it into their end. Gemma Tassell (Riverina Hotel Players Player) ran all game, putting pressure on her opposition and provided plenty of talk, Bron Hicks (Tantrum Hair and Beauty Coaches Award) worked hard the whole game and was a calm head working the ball into the shooters and picking off intercepts in the mid court. Dimity Comb (Hay Bowling and Golf Club Coaches Award) worked tirelessly in the defensive end taking many intercepts and strong rebounds.
B Reserve
Hay 32 defeated Ultima 30
B Reserve started off pretty steady but after the first quarter we had a 4 goal lead, by the end of the 3rd it was getting tough and the score was even, but thanks to our solid backline of Talitha Brown (Hay Lions Players Player Award), Jessica Weymouth (Hannah McGufficke Award) and our running machine Kylie Brettschneider (IGA Award), we managed to take a 2 goal lead and maintaining that to win the game.
Under 17’s
Ultima 42 defeated Hay 34
The 17’s faced off against the experienced Ultima team in a hard-fought battle. Unfortunately the Lions couldn’t secure a victory, but the team showed a lot of potential when they really started to gel in the fourth quarter. Lucy Shea (Peter Mullins Building Players Player Award) was tireless in Centre, running all day, pulling in intercepts and feeding her Shooters well, Sienna Lund (Active Farmers Umpire Award) played in GS, moved and shot well in the circle and Kodi Scott (Murrumbidgee Realestate Coach Award) played an outstanding game in GK, shutting down her opponent at every chance.
Under 14’s
Ultima 35 defeated Hay 24
This was a tough game, but never the less the girls fought hard. Having a mix of new players and returning players, it took time for the girls to gel and work together. Jade Doidge (Hay Newsagent Award) played a great game in defence and in a new position, chasing every loose ball and had many intercepts. Poppy Barnes (Lund Constructing Award) played an all around great game, supportive on and off the court to her teammates and Hannah Jamieson (Hay Calisthenics Award) worked well to position herself well to shoot, and converting!
F Troop
Hay 45 defeated Ultima 3
The Under 12’s got off to a fantastic start, keeping the opposition scoreless in the first quarter. Every player contributed to a great win, showing a healthy mix of determination and enthusiasm. Maggie Shields (Canteen Award) was dominating in defence with a game tally of 18 intercepts, Rachel Taylor (Active Farmers Award) shot 28 goals and Grace Auldist (Canteen Award) was solid in defence sticking to her player very tight.
